ZERO DOWNTIME AND

NO MAINTENANCE

 

Midtjysk Sewer Cleaning is a fast-growing municipal sewer-cleaning service provider in Viborg, Denmark which specialises in vacuum cleaning. The company operates within a 1,500 km2 area inhabited by approximately 100,000 people. It was founded by Brian Larsen in 1995 and is now owned and run by Anny Larsen.

Operating a profitable sewer service company has not always been easy. CEO Anny Larsen explains: “When we started, most of our fleet used rotary vane pumps. Back then, they were the most common pumps used in our industry. But we often struggled with this traditional equipment – we had two huge challenges.”

TWO HUGE CHALLENGES

“The first was the financial challenge. We had to repair the pumps’ impellers all the time as they got worn out, which caused unplanned maintenance and extra repair costs. Not only that, but we also lost revenue because we could not respond to calls without our trucks. That was very expensive downtime!

The other challenge was that the rotary vane pumps were very noisy and used oil. There was a location in the Viborg city area where we had to start work at 5 a.m., and we got many complaints from residents because the pump noise woke them up in the morning. And the operators were not happy about breathing in oil fumes at work all day long.”

A SWITCH TO A MORE PROFITABLE MODEL 

The sewer cleaning company knew something had to change. Anny says: “We couldn’t continue to operate using vane pumps. The business wasn’t profitable, the pumps were costly and noisy. So, we decided to research our options. The vacuum truck manufacturer recommended we try the liquid ring vacuum pumps from Samson. We ordered our first truck equipped with a Samson pump in 2006 to see if the pump would make any difference to our business. We soon noticed that the Samson liquid ring truck had zero downtime and we had no extra maintenance costs. We also noticed a huge difference in the noise level. Liquid ring pumps operate at a very low, constant noise level; this creates a very good work environment for the operator and doesn’t disturb the neighbours. When vane pumps operate, besides their noise level being very high it also fluctuates, giving operators migraines. We’d also solved the problem with the oil fumes since liquid ring vacuum pumps only use water.”

100% SAMSON EQUIPPED FLEET

Fifteen years have passed since Midtjysk Sewer Cleaning acquired its first sewer cleaning truck equipped with a Samson liquid ring vacuum pump. Today the entire company fleet uses Samson pumps. After seeing how profitable it is to own a truck equipped with liquid ring technology, we chose to switch all our trucks to use Truck Masters. When a truck from our fleet is off the road now, it’s never because of the pump – it’s always because of other components on the truck.”  – Anny Larsen CEO

 

GREAT TO WORK WITH

The company’s latest investment is a new vacuum truck equipped with a Truck Master 2500, operated by Tonny Damholt. The new truck was delivered in November 2020. Tonny has 14 years’ experience as a vacuum truck operator, and says: “For the past 11 years, I’ve only operated trucks equipped with Truck Masters. I must say, there is a huge difference between liquid ring pumps and vane pumps.  I never go home with headaches caused by noise, even though I do not wear ear defenders, and it’s a pleasure not to be breathing in oil fumes. If you asked me to describe Truck Masters in a word, I would say ‘reliable’. I’m never worried that the pump on my truck will break or cause me trouble. We usually work with big vacuum trucks like the one we’ve got here, but I heard Anny has also ordered a Samson city vacuum truck which will be delivered in the first quarter of 2021. I’m looking forward to it being delivered so I can try that out too.”
